UPDATE ON CONDITIONS AT GREAT SALT LAKE May 13th 2023

We had an incredible April with American Avocets! The Avocets and ducks are starting to thin out now, but Phalaropes, Eared Grebes, and Franklin’s Gulls are here in great numbers. I’m also seeing large flocks of Long-billed Dowitchers and Black-bellied Plovers, as well as occasional Willets, Long-Billed Curlew, Black-Necked Stilts, Yellowlegs, White-faced Ibis, and a few lingering ducks. The water is still rising, covering up some of the worst mud, which is nice for photographers, but it also means the shorebirds are moving with the mud. The lake has gone up four feet from its all-time low, and we now have more water in the lake than we’ve seen since 2020! It’s a great time to visit.
